A man and a woman are drawn together after losing their loved ones in a traffic accident. A Muslim woman tries to procure a fake passport. A writer tries to use theater to connect with a charismatic orphan in a juvenile prison. An aspiring actor battles morning commuters to make it to an audition. These are a few of the stories that comprise "Mumbai Cutting ...A City unfolds", a bold new project which brings together ten of the best directors in India and presents them with the unique challenge of interpreting Mumbai, one of the most dynamic, prosperous and vivacious cities in the world, in their own way. At times stark, comical, cynical and hopeful, these diverse visions capture the complexities of the 60 million people that have been drawn to India’s dream factory, where struggling for survival is the main pastime. The mythological story of Rama and Sita is retold from a modern and refreshingly female perspective in Nina Paley’s animated film SITA SINGS THE BLUES. Three shadow puppets form a hilarious chorus as they relate the story of goddess Sita’s separation from Lord Rama focusing on the lesser known parts of the story, after her rescue, which challenge the whole notion of devotion and purity. Nina’s own romantic misadventures parallel Sita’s journey as she follows her husband across the world to India only to get dumped via email for her troubles. The whole thing is jazzed up, literally, by musical interludes set to the 1920’s vocals of Annette Hanshaw.
In her first feature length film, Nina Paley audaciously weaves multiple narrative and visual styles giving each story thread its own distinctively unique look. But the film’s technical daring would go to waste without her wonderfully witty script which lives up to its tagline as “The Greatest Breakup Story Ever Told.”.

This exciting project brings together Franz Osten's finest, most accomplished and stunningly beautiful Indian silent film from 1929, 'A Throw of Dice' with British Asian Nitin Sawhney one of the most influential and versatile creative music talents.
Based on the pivotal gambling episode from the Maharabata “A Throw of Dice” is a love story that tells the tale of Ranjit and the nefarious Sohan, to kings with a passion for gambling and the same woman, Sunita.
One day Ranjit wagers everything in a crooked game of dice and loses it all, his crown and Sunita (his bride to be) and is forced to become the scheming Sohans’s slave. Through a turn of fate Sohan’s evil deeds are uncovered and undone. And as a result, he hurls himself off a cliff into the raging rapids below. Sunita and Ranjit are reunited, finding true love.
Franz Osten The Germans fogot him, The British interned him, Indian Cinema audiences loved him. Despite the faxt that he was celebrated all over Europe before World War II, Franz Osten is hardly mentioned in film history books. Osten was a pioneer in the development of cinema. He took feature film production out of the studios into the word, and gave his films an authentic qualiy by combining documentary techniques with narratives drawn from the myths and legends of ancient India.

„No Masala – Traveling Indian Short Films“

Couples are trying to find an intimate space amongst the rocks by the sea in Mumbai. Envious doves in the city of Delhi are playing the same game all day long. First Albert Pinto appears to be just another struggling actor in the burgeoning film industry in Mumbai. But then things take a dark turn…. Late one night, a passenger leaves an expensive mobile phone behind in Shanu’s taxi. Perhaps this is his chance to do better for himself and his family? Kalakaar shows how the rubber eraser got accidentally invented and saved a sketch artist from being sent to the gallows. This are only a couple of films which will be shown!
Alternating the Bollywood mainstream innovative young film makers have emerged in India, challenging traditional clichés and presenting a fresh approach to the medium. For the forth time “No Masala - traveling Indian short films” stops at Frankfurt, carrying the newest works of the vital and growing short film scene in its luggage, presented personally by Bernd Luetzeler. No Masala collaborates with the Mumbai based "The short circuit".

Shoot on Sight

A fictional political thriller based on the London terrorist bombings of 7/7 and the subsequent police order to ‘Shoot on Sight’, the film unfolds the turmoil of the life of Tariq Ali, a Muslim police officer at Scotland Yard. Ali, born in Lahore and married to an English woman, is tasked to investigate the police shooting of suspected Muslim a in the London Underground.
Distrusted not only by his superiors in the police but also by his fellow Muslims, he finds his inquiry hampered from all sides. When evidence surfaces pointing to the slain man’s innocence, as well as the existence of a terrorist cell operating in his own back yard, Tariq must face the realisation that, sometimes, the right decision is the hardest one to make.
Tariq Ali (Shah), a Muslim police officer of Scotland Yard, is asked to hunt-down suspected suicide-bombers against the backdrop of the 7 July bombings in London. Ali's task becomes more complicated as an innocent Muslim is killed by armed police on the Underground. Ali, a Lahore-born British citizen married to an English woman with two children, is himself distrusted by his colleagues, despite his long service in the Metropolitan Police. The cast include Brian Cox, Sadie Frost, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Cloudia Swann.

Born into Brothels
Born into Brothels, by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, is the winner of the Oscar 2005 for Best Documentar. A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, Born into Brothels is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes.
The most stigmatized people in Sonagachi, Calcutta’s red light district, are not the prostitutes, but their children. In the face of abject poverty, abuse, and despair, these kids have little possibility of escaping their mother’s fate or for creating another type of life. In Born Into Brothels, directors Zana Briski and Ross Kaufmann chronicle the amazing transformation of the children they come to know in Sonagachi. Briski, a professional photographer, gives them lessons and cameras, igniting latent sparks of artistic genius that reside in these children who live in the most sordid and seemingly hopeless world. The photographs taken by the children are not merely examples of remarkable observation and talent; they reflect something much larger, morally encouraging, and even politically volatile: art as an immensely liberating and empowering force.
