New Generations - Independent Indian Film Festival
9 to 11 November 2012 at Kino Orfeos Erben

Motiv 2012From 9 to 11th November 2012 the fourth „New Generations – Independent Indian Film Festival will" bring highlights of the new Indian Cinema to Frankfurt. The festival is unique in Germany and has been very well received beyond Frankfurt. Again in 2012 at the renowned cinema Orfeos Erben we will present fascinating high quality productions from the genres feature, documentary and short film, among them some Germany premieres. In 2011 we showed critically acclaimed films such as “Bombay Diaries”, starring Amir Khan or “West is West”. Director Onir from India was one of our guests.

“Indien aktuell” wrote about the mostly sold out festival 2011:

„Again the small but really exquisite „New Generations – Independent Indian film Festival“ at the rewarded Cinema Orfeos Erben in Frankfurt presented highlights of the new Indian cinema. And again the third edition of the multifaceted, three day festival directed by Binu Kurian Joseph and Petra Klaus lived up to it’s high ambitions. Still we wish there would be more festivals like the „New Generations“ of Indian Vibes. The sold out shows show that there is a request for this kind of films. We are already looking forward to the festival next yea

The festival is organized by the non-profit organisation Indian Vibes Neue Generationen e.V.

Miss Lovely
Germany premiere

Director Ashim Ahluwalia will be present in person (tba)

Miss Lovely 1Bombay, 1988. Vicky and Sonu are brothers and partners in crime. They produce “C” grade films in the lower depths of Bollywood – lurid horror films, erotic bandit pictures, sleazy social dramas. From a humid one-hour hotel, amidst spilled whisky and bouts of womanizing, Vicky churns out illicit titles like “Dolly Darling” and “Lady James Bond” for India’s small-town picture houses. He leaves the donkey-work to Sonu, his withdrawn, dim-witted younger sibling, who often cleans up after him.
Returning exhausted from a sales trip peddling erotic reels in the hinterland, Sonu encounters a mysterious girl on the train and is drawn to her fragile beauty. She’s only just arrived in Bombay and her vulnerability soothes his own sense of despair. Her name is Pinky and she appears to be a struggling actress.

Vicky dismisses the girl as a gullible piece of flesh but Sonu is desperate, bewitched by Pinky’s silent radiance. He knows that only she can save him; make his emptiness disappear.

Miss Lovely 2As the seasons change, Sonu begins to resent his hard-edged brother. He no longer wants toslave for Vicky’s lawless operation and decides to make a film of his own, with Pinky in the lead. A double debut – producer and star. It’s a reckless, nihilistic venture with no story and no crew in place. But he has a title – the film will be called ‘Miss Lovely’ and Sonu will do whatever it takes to make it.

But nothing is what it seems in this garish underworld of shifting alliances, double dealing, and quivering flesh. Out on the streets three years later, Sonu realizes that his whole world has turned upside down.

A baroque tale of betrayal and doomed love, the animal instincts of the struggling actress prove to be the most cutthroat of all. As paranoia and violence spiral out of control, brother turns on brother, and blood spills like water. Sonu, now alone and abandoned, aimlessly wanders the streets, junkyards and film studios, aching for one last glimpse of Pinky.

“Miss Lovely” is Ahluwalia’s first feature drama and has been selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival 2012.

Directors statement:
Miss Lovely is a tribute to the Bollywood underground, an audacious cinema with wild cinemascope compositions, lurid art direction rollicking background soundtracks and gut wrenching melodramas.

Lucky Red Seeds - Manjadikuru
Hesse premiere

Lucky Red Seeds 1Manjadikuru is a trip back to 1980 in Kerala, India. 10-year-old Vicky, an immigrant child, arrives in a small village in Kerala, but the entire story is narrated to us by the grown-up Vicky who returns to the same ancestral home years later. His adult reflections are juxtaposed against the childhood visual narrative – bringing to life the magic of childhood and a past era.

Vicky’s ancestral home is an old cavernous house in a rural village. The usually desolate house is now bustling with the large disjointed family who have arrived to attend the grandfather’s funeral. For several years the siblings had moved apart as a result of one-upmanship and personal squabbles. But now all of them have come together to attend the funeral. The traditional sixteen days of mourning lays the perfect ground to relive all their mutual quirks and past tensions.

In the midst of the family infighting and mourning, Vicky befriends his younger cousins Kannan & Manikutty and the servant girl Roja. While Vicky shows off his bookish knowledge to his new friends, he learns many things from them.  The whole rural atmosphere is a learning ground of things he had never experienced in his boxed-in lonesome cosmopolitan boyhood. A pond full of fishes, the serpent cove, a funeral for tadpoles, mango-laden trees and Manikutty’s favorite red-seed collection keep the energetic foursome busy through the days.

Lucky Red Seeds 2Alongside the children’s own adventures, they also witness the changing pattern of relationships in their disintegrating family.

At the end of the mourning period, the much-awaited will & testament of the deceased grandfather is to be read out. Most family members had stayed on for the 16 days, hoping to receive inheritance of the sprawling ancestral home. The children see the real stories of the various adults emerge as the days move on. The masks fall away and the real people begin to appear. Each of them has their own story, struggles and eventually their own resolution. In the midst of it, they almost become the family they used to be, but will it last.

Many years later the narrator yearns to retain that point of view which he believes is kinder, truer and better than that of most adults. The journey is one of nostalgia but also one of returning to that lost age of innocence.

The Great Indian Marriage Bazaar
Hesse premiere

Director Ruchika Muchhala will appear in person

Great Indian Marriage Bazaar 1Every aspect of the India’s social, commercial and cultural fabric revolves around the axis of marriage: Bollywood movies usually end in a festive marriage scene, beauty products are advertised for an end-goal of looking beautiful at one’s wedding and children are inculcated at a young age that the most important event in their lives will be their marriage. “The Great Indian Arranged Marriage Bazaar” is a fascinating journey into the nucleus of Indian society: the marriage, arranged style.

The film is told through the Directors' perspective as Ruchika faces mounting pressure to get married and moreover, to get an arranged marriage. As her persistent mother goes full forth in this quirky and raw journey that her aunts' dub as 'mission-son-in-law', Ruchika navigates through the 'marriage bazaar' by talking with people in the business and two brides-to-be in Mumbai.

Great Indian Marriage Bazaar 2Interviews with the online matrimonial websites, private detective agencies, cosmetic surgeons who perform a surgery called hymenoplasty, and a female psycho-therapist are intertwined with the stories of two brides-to-be - Sonali, a police woman from a working class family who is searching for a partner who is willing to become a part of her family, rather than the other way around; and Preeti, a middle-class family-oriented girl believes that marriage is defined by the joining of two families from within her specific ethnic community. Through these stories, the film looks at the modern-day crisis urban Indian women face when thrown into the great 'marriage bazaar'.
